Three Illinois and Mississippi River Barge Tours Scheduled

You need to register before the July 27 deadline for the August barge tours.

An educational barge tour on the Illinois River has been scheduled for Aug. 6, and along the Mississippi River on Aug. 8 and 14.

The Illinois River Barge Tour will take place in the Peoria-Pekin area from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 6.

The Mississippi River Barge Tour in Alton will take place from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 8

The final tour, originating in Bettendorf, Iowa, will be a 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. tour on Aug. 14.

Barge tour participants will experience the mechanics of river transportation, hear local businesses explain how they utilize the river, as well as hear a presentation on watershed management and environmental restoration.

Each tour lasts two to three hours. All participants must be at least 12 years of age or older. Boarding a barge may be difficult for those with disabilities or mobility restrictions.

The barge tours are free and hosted by the Illinois Corn Growers Association, the Illinois Farm Bureau, Illinois Soybean Association, Iowa Corn Growers Association and the Waterways Council Inc.

Optional services for bus transportation are available for purchase upon reserving a seat. Registrations are on a first come, first serve basis and the reservation deadline is July 27. Reservations by phone will only be accepted when paying by credit card.
